Winners have emerged in the Abuja International Housing Show, AIHS for 2021. A 2020 graduate of Urban and Regional Planning, Yusuf Usman is the team leader of the first position.
The AIHS youth competition on affordable housing designs and ideas 2021 was birthed in the wake of the country’s need for affordable housing in the country which is one of the persisting issues of high national priority.
The convener of the Abuja International Housing Show, Festus Adebayo, while speaking during the unveiling of the competition in July, noted that affordability often eludes many populations including low- and middle-income earners such as teachers, military personnel, health care workers, and most civil servants. He emphasised that the Affordable Housing Designs and Ideas Competition will focus on a new generation of thinkers on the concept of delivering affordable homes.
The competition kicked off on August 6, 2021 with over two hundred (200) youths indicating interest to participate. On Friday, 27th August 2021, thirty six (36) entries scaled through to contest anonymously at the first stage which lasted over a month. On Friday 10th September 2021 the second stage of the competition began with only eleven (11) qualified entries and on Friday 15th October 2021, the Jury announced that only eight entries qualified for the third stage. At every stage entries were submitted anonymously with a unique code to ensure fairness in the evaluation process.
Meanwhile, on the 5th of December 2021, the Jury announced three winners of the competition, they are: 1ST Prize Winner – YC46, Team Leader – Yusuf Usman (2020 Urban & Regional Planning graduate), Team members: Adamu, Mahfuza Abubakar, Idris, Attahiru Muhammad, Mujahid Haruna Garba, Ameh B. Odachi, Mujahid Elnafaty. 2ND Prize Winner – YC 24, Attah Arome Eldad; 3RD Prize Winner – YC 42, Abdullahi Ali Ahmad.
The AIHS Affordable Housing Designs and Ideas Competition 2021 has drawn technical partnership from Professional Bodies and had highly skilled experts in the Housing Industry as members of the evaluation Committee and Jury. The youth competition enjoys sponsorship from the Federal Mortgage Bank Of Nigeria, Family Homes Funds Ltd, Brains and Hammers Ltd, Modern Shelter Ltd, Real Estate Developers Association of Nigeria, Millard Fuller Foundation, Black Orchad among Others.
The committee and jury included Arc. Sam Odia, a leading affordable housing developer in Nigeria as the Chairman, and many eminent professionals in the construction industry, Engr. Harmony Kunu, Arc. (Mrs) Bamidele Falako, Tpl Lekwa O Ezutah, Engr. Jumoke Adegunle, Arc. Adewunmi Okupe, Qs (Mrs) Mercy Iyortyer, Barr. Festus Adebayo as members, and Adegoke Prince Folorunsho.
