Why Nigerians get ripped off when they buy property, expert.
Dr. Prince Williams-Joel, a lawyer and real estate investment coach, has written three books about the pros and cons of the real estate business. These books are meant to help landlords and renters work out their problems and teach Nigerians about law and property.
Most books about the real estate business tend to deal with problems by giving answers to common technicalities and problems that come up in the business.
People from all walks of life came to the event in Lagos, including top government officials, business leaders, lawyers, investors, and practitioners, among others.
Williams-Joel, who is also the Senior Partner of Prince Joel & Associates, talked about the books. He said, “The first book is called “Understanding Your Rights as a Tenant/Landlord Under the Nigerian Law.” Its main purpose is to teach people what their rights are.
“Whether you’re a landlord or a renter, it’s important for everyone to know their rights. This would not only help clear up problems between landlords and renters, but it would also be fair to everyone. If you go to court today, you’ll see a lot of landlord-tenant cases, and one side is always the victim. So, the book will teach Nigerians about the rights and responsibilities of each side. A society that doesn’t educate its people is dead.
“A lot of people get ripped off when they buy a house because they don’t do their due diligence. To make this happen, you need to follow some basic steps and strategies, and this is what the book is about. It goes even deeper into jurisdictional issues, which means looking at different parameters when buying properties in different states within the country, since each state has its own structure and basic due diligence methods.
