The Minister of Works, Engineer Nweze Dave Umahi, has urged cement manufacturers to lower cement prices to N7,000 immediately.
He warned that failure to comply within a week would prompt him to officially report the issue to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Umahi noted that the exchange rate has dropped significantly while petrol prices are decreasing, easing economic pressure on construction costs.
Contractors complained about high cement prices, considering switching back to asphalt, raising concerns over construction affordability nationwide.
Cement Prices Must Reflect Economic Changes, Says Umahi
Umahi emphasized that when the dollar neared N2,000, cement prices surged from N7,500 to N9,500 without justification.
He insisted that with the exchange rate now around N1,400, cement manufacturers must reflect the changes by reducing prices accordingly.

If prices remain unchanged after one week, Umahi vowed to escalate the matter to President Tinubu for urgent intervention.

He warned that MTN, which funds the project, would be held accountable if construction defects arise after completion.
The Minister of State for Works and the Permanent Secretary praised efforts to fast-track projects and ensure quality outcomes.
They urged the contractor to align with the Renewed Hope administration’s vision and deliver the project within the stipulated timeframe.
