The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to introduce and enforce stricter regulations to forestall building collapse.
At the plenary on Thursday, the House adopted a motion titled, ‘Need to Curb the Rising Incidence of Building Collapse in Nigeria’ as moved by Wale Raji and Chinedu Martins.
The House urged the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing to implement the National Building Code in order to regulate construction in the country and safeguard lives and properties.
The House also called on the Standards Organisation of Nigeria to sanitise the building materials sector to get rid of substandard goods in the markets.
The lawmakers further urged the Nigerian Institute of Building and the Nigeria Society of Engineers to ensure proper supervision of workmen and carry out sensitisation campaigns to enlighten the public on the need to use quality materials and professionals in construction of buildings.
They also called on the Federal Ministry of Work and Housing to liaise with the Building Collapse Prevention Guild to carry out assessment of buildings prone to collapse in order to alert residents and avert impending loss of lives and properties.
Consequently, the lawmakers mandated the House Committees on Works; and Housing and Habitat to ensure the implementation of the resolutions.
Meanwhile, the House has called for a quick fix of roads in the Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State, which has led to deaths and loss of properties.
The House unanimously adopted a motion sponsored by Jimoh Ojugbele at the plenary on Thursday, titled ‘Need to Rehabilitate Federal Roads in Ado-Odo/Ota Federal Constituency of Ogun State.’
Moving the motion, Ojugbele said, “The House is concerned that in spite of the huge revenue generated by the industries in Ado-Odo/Ota Federal Constituency of Ogun State, the Lagos-Ota-Abeokuta road, the Atan-Lusada-Agbara road, the Sango-Atan-Idiroko road, and Ado-Odo-Ikoga road, all in Ado-Ota/Ota Federal Constituency of Ogun State, are in deplorable condition.”
