Onitsha, Anambra State – Tensions are high in Onitsha following the demolition of a multi-million naira property. The owner, Mr. Uzoeto Sabest, has threatened to take his own life in protest against what he calls an unjust act by the Onitsha South Local Government Area.
Allegations Against the Local Government
Speaking to journalists at the demolition site on Saturday, Sabest accused the council chairman, Chief Emeka Orji, of orchestrating the destruction of his N700 million investment. He condemned the demolition as “inhumane, unlawful, and a gross abuse of power.” He also called on Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, to intervene urgently.
Property Ownership and Legal Claims
Sabest stated that he had all legally required documents, including a Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) and an approved building plan. He claimed that despite an ongoing court case concerning the property, Orji bypassed due process and ordered the demolition without regard for the law.
Impact on Business Owners
Expressing his devastation, Sabest lamented the impact of the demolition, not only on himself but on the numerous traders who operated within the premises. He explained that the structure housed several businesses, many run by small-scale traders relying on the space for their livelihood.
“The local government has no authority under Nigerian law to demolish private property in this manner. If my land was illegally acquired, the governor should have revoked my C of O through due process. This is lawlessness,” he stated.
Previous Discussions and Legal Warnings
Sabest further revealed that when Orji assumed office in 2023, he was invited for discussions regarding the property. A five-member committee, set up by the council chairman himself, reviewed his case and reportedly validated his ownership. However, despite this confirmation, the council continued to issue removal notices and ultimately carried out the demolition.
He claimed that in January 2025, his legal team wrote to the local government and relevant security agencies to reaffirm that the matter was still in court. Yet, his warnings were ignored. He also alleged that threats had been made against his life, with local officials reportedly warning him about a plot to eliminate him and label him as an “Unknown Gunman (UGM).”
Government’s Defense
Reacting to the accusations, the Secretary of Onitsha South Local Government, Mr. Paul Onuachalla, defended the council’s actions. He stated that the demolished land originally belonged to the government and was designated for a primary healthcare project.
“Mr. Sabest was well aware that his transaction was illegal. He has no basis to accuse the local government of wrongdoing when he knowingly acquired government land,” Onuachalla said.
Calls for Transparency and Justice
As the controversy deepens, residents and stakeholders in Onitsha are calling for transparency and a thorough investigation into the matter to ensure justice prevails.
