The President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Mrs. Margaret Oguntala, has attributed the frequent building collapses in Nigeria to quackery, not to registered engineers.
Oguntala stated this during an inspection of the ongoing headquarters project of the Northeast Development Commission (NEDC) in Maiduguri on Tuesday.
She emphasised that the involvement of non-registered or unqualified individuals in construction projects is a key factor in building failures.
According to her, these collapses are not linked to professionals who are properly registered with the NSE.
Oguntala urged Nigerians to always consult with the Nigerian Society of Engineers to ensure they hire qualified engineers for their projects.
Oguntala also advised individuals planning to build structures to verify the credentials of engineers with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN).
She said the NSE has a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the NEDC, ensuring that projects are well-conceived, designed, and implemented by qualified professionals.
Oguntala revealed that the NSE has nominated experts to collaborate with the government in finding sustainable solutions to prevent future building collapses and to address the challenges posed by the Alau Dam collapse that occurred in September 2024.
