The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have walked out of the ongoing minimum wage negotiations with the Federal Government and the Organised Private Sector (OPS), rejecting the proposed new minimum wages of N48,000 and N54,000, respectively.
The labour unions described the offers as “ridiculous,” stating that they lack seriousness and supporting data.
According to a source within the TUC, the unions were firm on their proposal for a N615,000 minimum wage, while the OPS maintained that no member pays less than N78,000.
“Labour presented first, standing on our N615,000 proposal. The OPS then proposed N54,000, followed by the government’s N48,000 offer.

There was no data to support their proposals, and this lack of seriousness prompted us to walk out. We will return when they are ready to engage in serious negotiations,” the TUC source stated.
Following the walkout, the NLC has called for an emergency press briefing to address the situation.
