The council for the regulation of engineering in Nigeria has commiserated with the families of victims of the building collapse while calling on Nigerians to do things the right way in the built industry.
President of COREN, Engineer Alimasuya Rabiu says the incident is one which could have been avoided and therefore shows lapses in the system. He went further to say many things could have been responsible for the collapse so it would only be speculations to give a specific reason at this stage.
Engr Rabiu says he cannot say precisely exactly what went wrong as he is still waiting for technical report with facts and not just mere speculations and assumptions.
He agreed with the step taken by the Lagos state government in carrying out ongoing investigations and the suspension of the general manager of the Lagos state building control agency stating that his agency is responsible for the control of building in Lagos therefore he has some explanations to make which would be useful in the investigations.
A 21 storey building, he said is not a bungalow, so should have been treated as it is ‘A mega project!’ with the use of professionals. He stated that the investigations would be extended to other neighboring buildings to test the integrity of the buildings in order to avoid another disaster.
He further encouraged engineers and developers to use quality materials and personnel to bring about exceptional results and control future occurrence of building collapse.
