PERRY COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) – The opening of a new apartment complex in Hazard is giving hope to people in the area.
The 12 unit building provides affordable housing for domestic violence victims and their families.
Andrea Miller, with Kentucky Coalition Against Domestic Violence, says this project helps provide people with a fresh start.
“These units are specifically for survivors of domestic violence and there children. For them to live in while they have a chance to rebuild and recover from incidences that have happened to them into their family,” said Miller. ” I have seen survivors move from homelessness to owning their own home and being homeowners through the support of the coalition and our member programs. ”
Wayne Koehler, with National Housing Associates, says helping people get back on their feet.
“This really helps these communities because we are bringing affordable housing into communities that need it and that is also located close to their job,” said Koehler. “People still have to work but yet their rent is below normal market-rate rent and also that’s what makes them affordable.”
Making many people’s futures look a little brighter all because of this safe place they get to call home.
There are 84 units in total across the state.
