The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has passed a vote of no confidence on the contractor handling the East-West Road project, Messrs SETRACO Construction Company.
Umahi made the remarks after inspecting the progress of work on the highway on Wednesday. He decried the condition of the road despite the N71 billion pumped into its rehabilitation by the Federal Government.

“I am passing a vote of no confidence on the construction of this road. I won’t certify anything on this road; the road has failed and it is not acceptable to us,” Umahi said.
He also berated the company for using overloading as an excuse for the failure of the road. “Our roads are not properly being constructed, and I demand that these roads must be properly constructed,” he said.
Umahi has summoned the company’s project manager to Abuja on Monday to explain the failure of the road.
The East-West Road is a major highway that connects the Niger Delta region to other parts of Nigeria. It has been under construction for several years, but it has not been completed.
The road is in a poor state of repair, and it is a major source of frustration for motorists.
The minister’s vote of no confidence in the contractor is a welcome development. It shows that the government is serious about addressing the problems with the East-West Road.
It is hoped that the government will take steps to ensure that the road is properly constructed and completed as soon as possible.
