In a landmark move to enhance the welfare of its workforce, the Kano State Government, under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved the reintegration of state workers into the National Housing Fund (NHF) after a two-decade withdrawal from the Federal Government housing scheme.
During a ceremony marking the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), Kano State Head of Service, Abdullahi Musa, underscored the administration’s dedication to improving workers’ living standards. He stated that rejoining the housing scheme reflects Governor Yusuf’s recognition of the vital role affordable housing plays in boosting productivity and workforce efficiency.
Musa emphasized that the scheme offers an opportunity for workers to own homes, reducing the housing deficit in Kano and alleviating the socioeconomic burden of renting. He encouraged workers and labor unions to seize this chance to secure affordable housing solutions through the Federal Mortgage Bank.
FMBN Managing Director, Shehu Usman Osidi, hailed Kano’s return to the NHF as a testament to the state government’s renewed commitment to enhancing workers’ welfare. Osidi outlined the benefits of the scheme, which include single-digit interest loans for homeownership, home renovation, cooperative housing development, and rent-to-own programs.
According to Osidi, the FMBN has already financed 10 housing projects in Kano valued at over ₦6.8 billion, with most projects completed and delivered. Additionally, an extra ₦1.3 billion has been allocated for home renovation loans to further support workers in achieving their homeownership goals.
This reintegration marks a significant step in addressing Kano’s housing deficit while fostering economic and social stability for state employees.
