Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has called for rent and mortgage deferrals in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a letter to Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Corbyn said action must be taken to ensure landlords cannot evict tenants, and mortgage companies cannot take action against homeowners.
He added that the government should work with banks and other mortgage lenders to offer mortgage payment holidays.
The lenders have already taken some action regarding coronavirus, with high street lenders RBS, NatWest, TSB, Virgin Money and Santander being some to offer a deferral of mortgage and loan repayments.
Corbyn also called for an end to requirements to attend universial credit interviews at jobcentres in all cases, as well as full sick pay and lost earnings protection from day one for all workers, including the self-employed.
Corbyn said: “This crisis demands political as well as scientific judgments and clearer public communication based on greater transparency of scientific and behavioural evidence and modelling than has been provided to date.
“The public are rightly seeking a much higher level of explanation and transparency as to the course of action being taken, including whether more far-reaching measures, as taken in other comparable states, could be necessary.”
