The Kano State Emergency Management Agency, on Sunday, said no fewer than 95 farms and property valued at N1.5bn had been destroyed by flood in eight local government areas.
The Executive Secretary of the agency, Alhaji Sale Jili, who made the disclosure, noted that the Nigeria Meteorological Agency had earlier predicted flooding in 25 local government areas of the state as a result of expected heavy rainfall.
“About 26 persons were killed, 2,026 houses destroyed, 95 rice farms washed away and 19 persons injured due to flooding in the state,” he said.
Jili listed the affected LGAs as Bunkure, Minjibir, Tarauni, Doguwa, Rano, Ungogo, Tudun Wada and Tsanyawa.
He stated, “We have visited Bunkure, Minjibir, Tarauni and Doguwa to distribute relief materials to the victims, toward alleviating their sufferings.
“The items distributed include foodstuffs items, bags of cement, roofing sheets, mats and blankets.”
Jili added that the agency had deployed personnel in the Tudun Wada Local Government Area, which was badly affected by the disaster, to assess the damage and enable it to develop a comprehensive database.
According to him, the state government, in collaboration with the Federal Government, has set up an Internally Displaced Persons camp equipped with mattresses and beddings for flood victims, with capacity to accommodate over 700 persons.
Jili urged residents of the state to report any disaster to their ward heads, warning them against dumping of refuse on waterways as well as clearing their drainages so as to prevent flooding.
