New Initiative for Diaspora Homeownership
The Nigerian Capital Development Fund (NCDF) has launched a major affordable housing programme for Nigerians living abroad. This initiative, built on Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) across 20 states, targets the delivery of 10,000 homes over five years. It aims to restore trust in diaspora investments by offering government-backed, transparently allocated, and affordably financed residential units.
Focus Areas and Housing Plans
The programme’s first phase will deliver 2,000 units in five states: Lagos (Badagry), Edo (Benin City), Imo (Owerri), Oyo (Ibadan), and Benue (Makurdi). Each site will feature a mix of one- and three-bedroom apartments, terraces, and bungalows. NCDF will ensure modern urban planning standards and quality assurance for every unit.
The scheme eliminates the need for agents and middlemen by allowing Nigerians abroad to interact directly through a secure NCDF portal. Federal and state governments, along with the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), are backing the project to provide security and transparency.
Economic Benefits and Financial Structure
The housing scheme will not only provide homes but also boost the economy. NCDF expects to create more than 20,000 direct and indirect jobs. It will channel over N50 billion into Nigeria’s economy through structured housing finance.
State governments will allocate land for the projects. Certified private developers and diaspora subscribers will connect through a secure platform. The project offers off-plan sales, flexible payment options, and verified processes, making it easier for diaspora families to own homes without fear of fraud.
NCDF will manage the project through a special-purpose investment vehicle (SPV). This structure will attract impact-driven investors, diaspora cooperative funds, private equity, and international housing finance partners.
Building Trust with Transparency
NCDF’s Executive Chairman, Hareter Oralusi, described the programme as more than just a housing project. “This is a nation-building initiative, connecting global Nigerians back to their homeland with dignity and trust,” he said.
The programme tackles fraud and project failures that have discouraged diaspora investors in the past. With a focus on verified partnerships, clear documentation, and government guarantees, NCDF aims to make homeownership for Nigerians abroad safer and more attractive.
