The Kwara State Fire Service reported a devastating fire incident at Owode Market in Offa Local Government Area, resulting in the destruction of 50 shops and property losses estimated at over N360 million.
The fire, believed to have been caused by a dropped lit cigarette end, ignited combustible materials in the early hours of Tuesday.
Owode Market, the largest market in Kwara State, houses approximately 3,820 shops and 1,180 stands.
The fire started at around 2am, with firefighters from Offa alerted and on the scene by 2:30am.
Hassan Adekunle, Head of Media and Publicity for the Kwara State Fire Service, stated that despite the large number of shops in Owode Market, only 50 shops were significantly affected by the fire, thanks to the swift response and decisive actions of the firefighters.
Adekunle emphasized the importance of fire safety awareness and preventive measures, highlighting the need for caution to prevent such incidents in the future.

The firefighting efforts salvaged commodities and properties worth more than N12 billion, providing relief amidst the crisis.
However, the unfortunate incident resulted in property losses amounting to N360 million.
In response to the distress call, the Kwara State Fire Service quickly mobilized a team led by ACF Oyeyipo James.

Despite the challenging situation, the collaborative efforts of the firefighting teams, including federal counterparts, were instrumental in bringing the situation under control after a five-hour-long battle.
The fire service’s prompt and efficient response ensured the safety of lives and properties within the vicinity, underscoring their commitment to protecting the community in times of emergency.
