The federal government has approved the reconstruction and tolling of Akure-Ikere road.
This was disclosed via the Twitter account of the Ekiti state government on Friday.
The approval was secured by the governments of Ekiti and Ondo states, led by Kayode Fayemi and Rotimi Akeredolu respectively.
“The Government of Ekiti and Ondo States have secured Federal Government’s approval to reconstruct and toll Akure-Ikere road,” the tweet read.
The federal government had earlier hinted on its plan to reintroduce toll gates, fifteen years after the administration of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo scrapped them.
Reacting to the announcement, some Nigerians on Twitter encouraged the federal government to adopt the same approach in ensuring the rehabilitation of roads across the country, while some users condemned the decision to toll the road.
A user wrote “@tundefashola this is what should happen on our all federal roads, let not deceive ourselves, FG lacks capacity to maintain all the Federal roads in Nigeria @kfayemi,@RotimiAkeredolu please ensure the reconstruction is world class -dual carriage possibly.”
“As laudable as it sounds, please fix the road first before talking about tolls. What actual dividend can Nigerians get from APC without paying through the nose? And I hope its not a campaign gimmick to get Aketi reelected…,” another user tweeted.
