The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), has commenced the construction of the Sustainable and Emerging Technologies Institute (SETI) at Bayero University Kano (BUK).
The groundbreaking ceremony, led by NASENI’s Executive Vice Chairman/CEO, Mr. Khalil Suleiman Halilu, marks a significant step towards boosting technological innovation and industrial development in Nigeria. The 30-hectare institute will feature state-of-the-art facilities, including innovation hubs focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotics, and other cutting-edge technologies, supported by a reliable power supply.
NASENI’s Vision for SETI
Speaking at the event, Halilu emphasized NASENI’s commitment to fully building, equipping, and supporting the new institute. He highlighted the critical role of AI, robotics, and emerging technologies in driving economic transformation, stating that the project aligns with the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“We in NASENI are firm believers in the potential of young Nigerians to be the prime catalysts of the transformation that Nigeria requires. We will do everything within our powers to support them in fulfilling this important responsibility,” Halilu said.
SETI aims to nurture innovators, technologists, and entrepreneurs who will not only shape Nigeria’s future but also make an impact on the global innovation landscape.
Tripartite Collaboration for Economic Growth
BUK’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, described the project as a major step in advancing Nigeria’s sustainable development and economic growth. He emphasized that SETI embodies the triple helix model, which fosters collaboration between government, academia, and industry to drive national progress.
“This marks the beginning of Nigeria’s journey towards sustainable development and massive job creation opportunities for the youth. BUK is proud to be the host of such a laudable initiative,” Abbas said.
Conclusion
The establishment of SETI reflects Nigeria’s commitment to leveraging emerging technologies for socio-economic growth. By fostering innovation, research, and commercialization, the institute is expected to position Kano, BUK, and Nigeria as a global hub for technological advancements.
