At the 2024 conference of the Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers (NSChE), experts have called on engineers to play a pivotal role in revitalizing Nigeria’s industries and reducing the nation’s dependence on imported goods and services.
Prof. Funmilayo Osuolale, Coordinator of the NSChE Education and Research Sectoral Group, emphasized the need for engineers to move beyond theoretical research. Speaking at the event, she stressed the importance of translating academic discoveries into practical solutions that address societal needs. “We must use our research to empower the economy and reduce our reliance on foreign imports,” Osuolale said.
Conference Focuses on Bridging the Research-to-Market Gap
Dr. Ibrahim Muritala, Chairman of the conference, highlighted the event’s focus on overcoming challenges faced by Nigerian higher education institutions, particularly the underutilization of research. Many promising ideas remain confined to academic settings rather than being developed into market-ready solutions.
Muritala expressed frustration over missed opportunities for national development and self-sufficiency. “Our goal is to equip researchers with the skills needed to transition their work from the lab to the marketplace,” he explained.

Industry Leaders Offer Practical Guidance
The conference featured contributions from industry leaders and scholars who provided practical advice on commercializing research. Discussions covered topics such as identifying market needs, creating business models, securing funding, and navigating regulatory hurdles.
Attendees learned how to transform research into scalable businesses that address real-world issues, generate employment, and strengthen Nigeria’s economic stability. Muritala emphasized that the conference was not just about sharing knowledge but about igniting a movement where research fuels innovation and supports local industries.
