The Ekiti State Government has cautioned residents against constructing houses in flood-prone areas, emphasizing the dangers posed by flooding and the need for proactive prevention measures.
Chairman of the Ekiti State Environmental Protection and Watershed Management Agency Board, Bamitale Oguntoyinbo, issued this warning during an inspection of ongoing dredging projects at Inisa, Amutu, Oke Ose, and Mayan rivers in Moba Local Government Area.
Oguntoyinbo commended Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s administration for prioritizing residents’ safety, particularly in flood prevention efforts. He stressed the importance of proper waste disposal to prevent blockages in drainage systems and waterways, which contribute to flooding.

The General Manager of the Ekiti State Environmental Protection and Watershed Management Agency (EKSEPWAMA), Olukayode Adunmo, stated that the ongoing dredging projects aim to mitigate flood risks and protect lives and property.
According to Adunmo, the inspection tour allowed board members to assess project progress firsthand. “I had previously presented a report in the boardroom, but seeing the work on-site gives a clearer understanding of our efforts,” he said.

Special Adviser on Special Services, Prince Adewole Ajakaye, emphasized the importance of regular project evaluation to ensure timely completion and adherence to contract specifications. Despite slight delays due to mechanical issues with the swamp buggy excavator, Ajakaye expressed satisfaction with the progress of the Inisa River dredging project.
The state government reiterated its commitment to flood prevention and urged residents to cooperate by avoiding construction in high-risk areas and adhering to environmental safety guidelines.
