A coalition of Civil Society Groups has charged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to embark on proactive awareness creation about its intervention programmes.
The group said that many Nigerians are unaware of the existence of the CBN’s intervention programmes for the country.
Etuk Williams, President of Coalition of Civil Society Groups, gave the advice on Monday in Abuja at the seventh National Economic Summit with the theme: ‘Post COVID-19: Understanding the Economic Interventions of CBN and Roles of Civil Society Groups.’
Williams called on the CBN to partner with credible civil society groups to create awareness and more advocacies about its policies and programmes to the citizenry.
He said: “We will recommend to CBN and other agencies of government to get involved in more advocacy programmes using credible civil society groups in reaching out to the people and explaining these policies and their benefits. It is time to build back the trust
“It is a pity that despite the interventions and policy thrusts introduced by CBN, most people are not aware of them, thus making access to these interventions difficult despite the ravaging poverty in the land.
“Major interventions introduced by CBN with aim to resuscitate the economy despite the pandemic include Accelerated Agricultural Development Scheme(AADS), Agri-Business, Small and medium Enterprise Investment Scheme (AGSMEIS), Real Sector Support Facility (RSSF), Credit Support for Health Sector and Creative Industry Financing Initiative, among others.”
Commenting on the essence of the National Economic Summit, Williams explained that summit was an attempt to generate fresh narratives that would help shape the perceptions of Nigerians on the impact and efficacy of several monetary policies introduced by CBN to address the current economic challenges.
