The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was fined one million naira for illegally invading the property of an Abuja-based company.
On Tuesday, Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja fined the Commission.
The company whose property was invaded is Fezel Nigeria Limited, which is located at Plot 792, Cadastral Zone Industrial Estate, Idu-Abuja.
Officers from the EFCC were said to have stormed the company earlier this year for no apparent reason.
While delivering judgment in a suit filed against the EFCC, Justice Ekwo held that the Commission violated the plaintiff’s constitutional rights due to the manner in which the company was invaded by fully armed EFCC agents.
The court was said to have issued an order prohibiting the EFCC from disturbing, intimidating, harassing, or arresting any of the company’s employees.
According to the sitting judge, the Commission’s actions amounted to a violation of the plaintiff’s property rights under Section 43 of the 1999 Constitution.
The judge then fined the EFCC one million naira to be paid to the plaintiff for the violations of its constitutional rights.
