Babatunji Adegoke, a construction specialist, has emphasized the importance of digitisation in order to improve project performance and efficiency.
While speaking on the ‘Impact of digitisation in the construction industry’ at a conference organised by The Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors, Lagos Chapter recently, he said that the importance of digitisation in the construction space could not be overstated.
He defined digitisation as the use of digital devices such as phones and tablets to improve the performance and development of projects.
Adegoke recalled that during the Covid-19 pandemic, “everybody went digital. Before then, the construction team had to be in a particular place but Covid-19 has taught us to adopt digital tools which enhance construction operations.”
According to him, Africa is just beginning to adopt innovation in digitisation of the construction industry despite being popular in some other countries like Singapore and Malaysia.
He identified factors militating against digitisation in the country as poor power supply, access to data, lack of training facilities for construction professionals and government policy.
He said professional bodies could play a major role in encouraging members by training them on topics that relate to digitisation.
He said, “They can also sponsor members to conferences, seminars and workshops, so that they can be aware of the benefits of digitization.
