The Bauchi State government has announced a five-week school closure, effective from March 1 to April 5, 2025.
Jalaludeen Maina, the education ministry’s information officer, confirmed that the break was previously scheduled in the school calendar.
The closure applies to all public and private schools, including primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions across Bauchi State.
“Our students are not fasting while in school, so this break ensures they observe Ramadan at home with family,” he said.
He reassured parents that academic activities would resume immediately after Ramadan, ensuring continuity in the students’ education.
Parents Express Concerns About Learning Disruptions
Some parents criticized the extended break, arguing that students might forget lessons and struggle academically after returning to school.
Sunita Joseph, a concerned parent, emphasized that such a long holiday could negatively impact children’s academic progress and retention.
“Why is the Ramadan break this long? Students might forget previous lessons, making it harder to continue learning,” she said.
Ismail Raji, another parent, urged the government to reconsider the decision, warning about rising out-of-school children numbers.
Education Experts Call for Alternative Approaches
Mohammed Isa, an education advocate, criticized the break, highlighting Bauchi’s high out-of-school children rates compared to other states.
He urged the government to prioritize initiatives that encourage schooling rather than implementing prolonged holidays affecting students’ education.
With growing concerns, parents and stakeholders are calling for policies balancing religious observance with uninterrupted academic progress statewide.
