The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Nigeria Chapter has reiterated the need for government at all levels to ensure that building developers conform to national building codes in order to build a better environment for the next generation of engineers.
The appeal to government was made by the governor of Nigeria chapter 10 region, Engineer Saliu Lawal during a conference organized by the association recently in Lagos.
Engineer Lawal said that every building needs the expertise of a professional in various development stages, especially in contract procurement, design and the construction to avoid foundational errors.
The group also emphasized that it is only when government and other stakeholders begin to enforce standards in the building and construction that the sector will start to experience zero failures.
Engineer Lawal also spoke on the issue of quakes in the civil engineering profession which he described as one of the major problems affecting the building industry while calling on individuals to do their due diligence before employing the services of any professional.
The president of ASCE Nigeria International Section, Rasheed Hassan says the group is also looking at ways to design and construct buildings in tune with global trend and also checkmate the high occurrence of building collapse being recorded in the country.
