Skills To Employment Program: UWGN Set to Reduce Unemployment Gap
The United Way Greater Nigeria (UWGN) has disclosed its desire to bridge the unemployment and underemployment gap amongst Nigeria’s teeming young population leveraging on its ‘Skills to Employment Programme’ and hoped beneficiaries will take advantage of the rising demand for digital skills in the Nigerian economy to be gainfully employed.
The UWGN recently concluded the first cohort of the Skills to Employment Programme with 43 beneficiaries aged between 18 and 30 graduating from the training. The eight weeks training, which included a four weeks internship programme in digital marketing, front-end web development and graphics design.
A breakdown of the 43 graduating participants indicate that 24 were females, while 19 are males. A total of 27 digital marketers, eight front-end web developers and eight graphics designers benefited from the Skills to Employment Programme.
Olayemi Fasakin, programme manager, UWGN, said that for subsequent cohorts, the organisation plan to expand the program to reach more youth, while the process to identify more donors to fund a more expanded program is already ongoing.
“UWGN wishes to commend all implementing partners involved in the success of this program. We are indeed grateful to Nerdy Eye, WAVE Academies, Educate Nigeria, The Workplace Centre, JASS Academy and Sweet Sensation for partnering with us to bring about social impact in the lives of these youths,” Fasakin stated.
