Dilapidated buildings, old furniture, and a compound dotted with weeds are the sights to behold at Government Science College, Kagara, Niger state.
The school became the focus of media reports on Wednesday, following the abduction of 27 students by armed men who raided the state-run school in north-west Nigeria
As the world’s searchlight beamed on Kagara, there was another plaguing issue – the decaying and neglected housing structure which has gone viral, with our foreign friends and partners still in shock at the sight of the school.
The Northern part of Nigeria is still in its cold-dry periods and little wonder, how children could learn under a structure without doors, windows, and walls that are hanging to life on a thread.
Interestingly, this happens to be one example out of many crumbling classrooms and boarding houses in Nigeria. Even though the focus remains on the rescue of the abducted students, this has once again displayed the housing and infrastructural deficiencies in the rural areas of the country.
Governor of Niger, Abubakar Bello also confirmed that three staff and 12 family members at the school were also kidnapped.
While the federal government has deployed a security delegation to the state, Governor Bello of Niger has assured residents that efforts are ongoing to ensure the swift return of the victims.
