Officials today will announce record funding from the Department of Housing and Urban Development to build affordable housing for seniors.
Two-hundred-forty-two new homes will allow “very low-income” seniors to live independently in various locations across the state of Ohio, including Cleveland and East Cleveland. A 2 p.m. press conference will take place in East Cleveland.
Ohio’s 60-plus population is expected to grow 30 percent by 2030, according to a report from Ohio’s Department of Aging. Of Ohioans over 65 and older, 8 percent live in poverty. That percentage increases for minorities 60 and over, with nearly 18 percent living in poverty.
Representatives from HUD, Sen. Rob Portman’s office, local nonprofits, the Ohio Department of Aging and East Cleveland will all attend the press conference.
