The state has granted $5.5 million to a local non-profit to fight homelessness.
The 24-unit apartment building Phoenix Development Services will be located on NE Madison Avenue in Downtown Peoria.
An old bank drive-through is currently located where they plan the build the four-story building.
Pheonix Development Services Vice President of Housing and Community Development Nick Mitchell said the grant from the Illinois Housing Development Authority will help fight one of the big contributors to homelessness, lack of affordable housing.
“A project like this offers stable, quality, secure housing options for folks which is an upstream way of solving the problem of homelessness before it starts,” he said.
Mitchell said they currently have 150 housing applications that qualify for the building.
