Civil servants in the Ogun State Ministry of Housing have been asked to imbibe the attitude of keeping appropriate accounting records in line with best practices.
A Principal Accountant in the Ogun State Ministry of Budget and Planning, Mrs Rukayat Salami, gave this charge while delivering a lecture on ‘Elements of financial regulations’, at a training organised by the Ministry of Housing in Abeokuta.
The Press Officer, Ministry of Housing, Olawale Osunbiyi, in a statement, quoted Salami as saying that keeping financial records, in line with the dictates of Financial Regulations of the Civil Service would enhance accountability.
“Civil servants are thereby enjoined to imbibe the attitude of keeping appropriate accounting records. Complying with the dictates of the financial regulations would show the true financial position of the state, while enabling officers to be within the ambit of the law and also help civil servants avoid committing financial offences, which are punishable by law,” Salami added.
She explained that there was a need for all civil servants to work in synergy with their accounting officers for the smooth running of government agencies and parastatals, and for the actualisation of government’s goals in the interest of the people.
The Director, Administration and Supplies, Ministry of Housing, Mrs Grace Olubiyi-Kuforiji, said the training was imperative as it would broaden the knowledge of civil servants.
She said it would also help them improve on their expected roles, and urged participants to make good use of the knowledge gained in the discharge of their duties.
A quantity surveyor, Mr Kolawole Akinola and architect, Helen Coker, who spoke on behalf of other participants, commended the ministry for the training.
They were quoted to have said it was expository, informative and impactful, and would help them know more of their rights as well as duties.
