The Governor of Kaduna State, Senator Uba Sani, has announced a donation of N1m each to the families of the eight worshippers killed when the 150-year-old Zaria Central Mosque collapsed during prayers last Friday.
For those injured in the accident and in the hospital receiving treatment, the governor promised N500,000 each, while those who have been discharged would each get N200,000.
Sani spoke during a condolence visit to the Emir of Zazzau, Ambassador Ahmed Bamalli, in his palace in Zaria, on Tuesday.
He said the state government would collaborate with the Emirate Council to expedite action on the mosque’s renovation to enable worshippers to perform their religious rites.
“I was away on official duties when this unfortunate incident occurred. I spoke with His Highness and sent a delegation to express our condolences and to assess the situation.
“Today, I conveyed our condolences on behalf of the Kaduna State Government regarding the unfortunate incident that occurred at this iconic mosque,” the governor said.
Responding, the monarch commended the governor and his cabinet for the gesture, disclosing that the incident affected 25 people, with eight of them dead.
Bamalli added that from the brief he received from the Chief Medical Director of the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, three victims sustained multiple injuries and would undergo surgeries.
