Amidst public outcry over substandard building materials in Nigerian markets, the Federal Capital Territory Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB) says the 2023 Conference/Annual General Meeting (AGM) will feature discussions on topical issues bedeviling the building construction industry especially concrete and substandard building materials.
Chairman of the Institute, Bldr. Omale Peter Ameh who made the disclosure over the weekend at a pre-AGM press conference in Abuja, called on building and environment professionals, to contribute ideas to the development of effective policies that will address legacy challenges of the industry, especially building collapse.
Discussing the theme of the AGM that is scheduled for Wednesday March 29th, he explained that the theme, “Use of Concrete in Building Structures was strategic in order to address industry challenges emanating from wrong mix of concrete and other consequential oversights that have led to loss of lives and properties in the various incidences of building collapse across the country,”
He added that more economic measures is required by the incoming administration to ensure that building materials are of required quality before finding their way to Nigerians markets.
While calling for wide range participation of the general public, the Chairman explained that sub themes to be discussed at the conference will include concrete mix designs, types of concrete and areas of application in building structures and the preparation and interpretation of reinforced concrete structural drawings for building works.
