-insist on a private sector led approach
Towards sanitizing the real estate space in the country, the Real Estate Developers Association of Nigeria (REDAN),
has said that the Federal Government must support ongoing efforts to provide affordable housing for the masses, including supporting enactment of the real estate (development and regulation) Bill.
In a memorandum it submitted at the 10th meeting of the National Council of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, organized by the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing in Lagos on Tuesday, with theme “Housing Development as a Catalyst for Job creation, Social Inclusion and Economic Development”, REDAN applauded the Minister of works and housing, Babatunde Fashola’s plan o institute a National Housing Fund as a right step to accelerate housing delivery in Nigeria, but insisted that only a private sector led housing delivery can ease the supply and access to affordable mass housing for Nigerians.
Presenting the memorandum, the President of REDAN and also Chairman of the Council, Aliyu Wamakko, urged the government to support the association and other critical stakeholders in chatting new course for housing development.
He also called on FG to make accessible housing construction fund at low price to stimulate housing development….
” Governments st all levels should collaborate with REDAN as a private sector driven initiative to ensure functional and sustainable housing development., and concentrate on policy formulation to deepen housing and real estate development and accordingly should not be involved in direct construction and development of houses,” he said.
Wamakko further urged the government to create enabling environment and chat veritable policies for private sector driven initiative in housing development.
He reiterated that it is equally important that the government to make strategic and deliberate endeavors to negotiate with relevant MDA’s and the Central Bank to get funding for housing development at low cost.
REDAN is the principal agency and umbrella body of the organized real estate sector (public and private) with the mandate and responsibility of facilitating the delivery of affordable mass housing for Nigerians. Rural-Urban Housing Initiative (RUHI-774)The Association’s National Housing Development plan tagged RURAL-URBAN HOUSING INITIATIVE (RUHI-774), which aims at developing at least 100 housing units in each of the 774 Local Government Councils of has received some boost.
